Tips For Starting a Small Business

Invest in Yourself

Anytime someone starts a business, no matter what industry, it takes an investment upfront to eventually reap the rewards later on.

Know the Field You Are Entering

Listening to podcasts, watching Youtube videos, and attending professional conferences have all been helpful resources in learning about what interior design is and how to build my clientele. Personally, I love the LuAnn Nigara podcast and attending NeoCon in Chicago was so eye opening.

Develop a Website and Instagram

Having a professional website and Instagram establishes your name and is a great way to market yourself and express your branding. Paying a small fee per month to be able to use services like SquareSpace and Planoly has saved me so much time and energy in the long run. The monthly fees may seem like a pain, especially in the beginning if your budget is tight, but I’ve found it to be worth the money.

Dress the Part and Act Like You Know What You’re Doing (even if you don’t)

A new business needs to be established and branded. You are the face of your company and the way you present yourself matters!

Don’t Be Afraid to Ask Questions

Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there! You’ll never learn if you don’t ask. I have found that even very busy people are understanding and willing to help. Asking questions can save you so much time in the long run.
